A friend of mine is heading the west coast efforts to promote the 2nd World Congress Muslim Philanthropists conference, "Conventional to Strategic: A New Paradigm in Giving." The conference takes place in Abu Dhabi, UAE on March 22-23.
I wish I could go. I really enjoy seeing these niche based groups coming together. These convenings bring attention to ideas and actions that are already taking place but are not promoted much in "mainstream" philanthropic conversations.
The second congress is convening at a time when the need for well structured philanthropy will only increase amidst the most serious financial crisis in decades. It is therefore imperative for eminent philanthropists, corporation executives, and world leaders to lead with particular focus on how to maintain support to the social sector in critical times while continue exploring innovative avenues that faciliate a strategic shift in regional and worldwide giving.
You can read more about Dr. Tariq Cheema, co-founder of WCMP on Chicago Global Donors Network:
Tariq envisions a time when philanthropists from the global North will collaborate with philanthropists from the global South. “Our risks and opportunities as global citizens are common, whether it is the environment, terrorism, or poverty.” Speaking for his constituency, “it was amazing to see that [these] donors have an interest [not just] in their own regions but look forward to helping underserved communities throughout the world.”
