In the latest quarterly Alliance Magazine (Fall 2016), there are a series of articles discussing the current state of philanthropy in India. It provides valuable insights into philanthropists, NGOs, and the role of philanthropy in India’s democracy. In Bain’s Philanthropy Report 2015, India’s donors are contributing more and donating to a larger pool of non-profit organizations. In fact, more than a third of donors say they expect to increase their donations in the next five years. This has a profound effect on civil society organizations in India and how social issues will be tackled. It is an exciting time in India and the articles in the Alliance Magazine is only the tip of the iceberg.

This edition also features an interview with Melissa Berman, president of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, and an analysis of why private banks offer advice on philanthropy. Finally, op-eds from Ewa Kulik-Bielińska and Timothy Ogden highlight the gathering storm for liberal civil society in Poland and philanthropy’s response to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
